The design competition for the Skywalk at ITO, New Delhi, one of the busiest junction, was floated in 20016 by Public Works Department. The competition was won by a joint venture between – B&S Engineering Consultants, Mathur & Kapre Associates and Design Business Corporation, LLP.
The Urban Intervention by Studio Emergence was implemented to revamp the junction of Gokhale Road from where the maximum vehicles travel towards Worli. This is a widely used junction and though the footpath here is around 5 Metres wide it is usually used to park 2 wheelers and hawkers thus reducing the usable space considerably.
As cities grow, these wholesale markets are pushed to the periphery to ensure no interference in daily functioning. This relocation creates newly developed fragments, which are not fully equipped and planned to cater to the same.
This in turn creates a need to organise the flow and rethink the planning of the wholesale markets in a way that can accommodate the change.
In August last year, a seven-year-old Navya Singh encouraged by her advocate father Dheeraj Singh filed a petition in the court to save her neighbourhood park in Rohini’s sector 8 from converting into a site for the community hall. In December, after almost four months, the court ruled in of the petition and asked the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to select an alternative site for the favour proposed construction. It is an exemplary case in the contemporary times of our country. It brings into the limelight a three-fold perspective.
